New cycleway plan to slow down cars

City of Sydney Council has quietly ditched the Dunning Ave cycleway and launched a new cycleway in Rosebery stretching from Epsom Road down to Gardeners Road via Spring Street & Primrose Ave.

The council is calling the plan “A Quiet Way”, ditching any reference on their website of the word “cycleway”. It’s disappointing that no local City of Sydney councillor mentioned this idea during the 2021 Local Government Elections.

An expensive video of the plan for the “Quiet Way Rosebery”

Of the current 217 on-street parking spots currently available, most will be repositioned as 45 degree rear to curb parking, after the removal of nine spaces located on Primrose Avenue near Gardeners Road. This will see residents walk further to access the Rosebery Post Office, Physiotherapy & other local shops. We’re not sure why the council would remove car spots so close to local shops?

The cycleway will push adults & kids riding bikes into the middle of the road with a new grey ugly strip & with a thick white line from Epson Road down to Gardeners Road. The current plan sends cyclists to a dead end at each end of the cycleway. The plan has no mention of a pedestrian / bike crossing at the Epson Road entrance to link up with the Gunyama Park Aquatic & Recreation Centre.

Dunning Ave Cycleway — GONE! But…..

Before May 2023, the City of Sydney intends to take down the temporary cycleway that has been installed on Dunning Avenue. The barriers are going to be removed, and the road will be brought back to its prior condition.

In March 2021, it was reported that “1,000 trips were made every day” on the Dunning Avenue cycleway, despite the fact that nearby residents, workers & businesses never reported witnessing such cycle traffic, and it was heavily criticised at the time. Rosebery Community News asked the City of Sydney to publicly release the cycle data for verification, but the data was never released.

This new plan replaces the Dunning Ave cycleway. It’s a very North / South plan, no mention of the cycleway linking up with the businesses located towards the west at The Cannery, Mentmore Ave & Botany Road. Also no mention of the costs the tax & ratepayers?
